A Homophobic Student Video to Make the Angels Weep

Published April 19, 2009 @ 02:00PM PT

So sad, when youth calls holy hatred love.

That's all I care to say after watching the video below. Just watch it.

From Jason Mannino's (very fine) "Homophobia is Killing Our Youth" on Huffington Post:

GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Education Network) and Harris Interactive recently conducted a study called "From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America, A Survey of Students and Teachers." The study illustrates that 33% of teens report that students are frequently harassed because they are openly or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, or bisexual. It also shows that LGBT students are three times as likely to say that they do not feel safe at school and 90% of LGBT students state that they have been harassed or assaulted.

Watch these homophobic teenagers in action:
.

San Juan High School Gay Protest (Anti GLSEN)

Mannino continues:

If a child is taught to hate and fear diversity, then the next place he or she expresses that hate is at school. Ten percent of all hate crimes occur at schools and colleges. If hate is learned, then it lies on the shoulders of our schools, church officials, parents, teachers, and communities to teach our young kids acceptance before they continue hurting each other, and before they become adults who will likely pass their hatred to the next generation.

Amen.

  1. That video is so frustrating and depressing. When students organize in this way and claim they are stating their "opinion" and that they are exercising "free speech," they must be stopped immediately. Wearing t-shirts that refer to a Biblical scripture implying that their GLBT peers are sinful, perverse, and condemned to hell is not an opinion and censoring that activity is not a violation of their right to freedom of speech.

What these students fail to realize is that they are dehumanizing their GLBT peers and allowing a safe space for hate in their school, which leads to escalating harassment and abuse of GLBT (or perceived to be GLBT) students. When your opinion involves ostracizing, demonizing, and condemning an entire segment of the population, you are encouraging a climate of fear and violence.

However, censoring their t-shirts and possibly suspending them is not enough to address this issue. That is like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. Concerned school faculty, staff, parents, students, and religious leaders must stand up against hate speech and clearly articulate the difference between the freedom to state your opinion and the perceived freedom to demonize and ostracize another human being because they are not like you or don't believe what you do.

    Also: Amen to that, Mannino.

What can I say that I haven't said a million times before; it's time for the Abrahamic faiths and their God/s to be relegated to a place in the annals of mythology along with all the other Gods of ancient aeons.

To the so-called "enlightened" moderate and liberal theologians; Jew, Muslim ,and Christian, YOU give tacit approval for these Sub-Neanderthal cretins (see the above video) who can't get their heads out of their so called "holy" books  long enough to know anything about the real world. They study these so called "holy" books that spew forth nothing but hateful bile and venom, and are full of nothing but gibberish, along with nonstop violence and hatred.

No matter what liberal spin you put on the Bible to make Jesus a more palatable guru, the truth is that this fundamentalist young man is actually being a true representivitve of the bible, AND his God; the God of the Christian bible DOES hate gays, lesbians, and even cross dressers.

The only way to stop the hatred is to become educated, and rid ourselves of this superstitious and spiteful clap trap of a book/s, (the bible in this case), and STOP morphing Christianity into something it is NOT.

Christianity is NOT a tolerant religion, and as soon as you start preaching that it is, then you are inventing another religion, one we should perhaps call Christia-morph-ianity.

Jesus said, "I and my father are one;" so if God hated Gays, then so did his ooooh so "tolerant" son.

To the entire Gay, Queer, Lesbians, and Tran's people out there, stand tall, and don't let the ignorant bible thumpers intimidate you into silence. I am so sorry, that as far as your community is concerned, we still live in the dark ages because of religious intolerance and bigotry.

Eh? Pardon me? Did you say "NOTHING BUT hateful bile and venom"? "NOTHING BUT gibberish"? "NONSTOP VIOLENCE AND HATRED"? (caps mine). You are grossly oversimplifying. The Bible/Torah also has a lot of goodness and tolerance and acceptance in it, a lot of beautiful traditions, a lot of great stories with colorful characters, a lot of good lessons, a lot of wisdom. I'm not denying that it does *contain* "gibberish," "violence and hatred," "bile and venom"--it does. But there's much more than that! Let's not chuck the baby out with the bathwater...It's also important to remember that the bigots we're talking about make up only a small, "lunatic fringe" of Christianity. Don't try to lump them together with the thousands of tolerant, accepting, open-minded Christians out there. I think homophobia is terrible and I agree that in some cases Christianity and the Bible are used as tools to fan those flames, but I disagree with your overall simplistic bashing of the "Abrahamic" religions.

Full disclosure: I am a very liberal agnostic Reform Jew, so in some ways you struck a nerve here. And I most certainly do NOT give tacit approval to that kind of behavior.

Yes; religion isn't necessarily a bad thing, but can be abused. As I mentioned in my prior post, religion must grow with the times. Christianity is only as tolerant as the Christian can make it, and that's what must change.

But let's not reprimand the Christians now. It'll only give that little boy in the video another reason to protest. Afterall, we claim to be the more tolerant ones, don't we?

The Bible has been modernized before, and it can again. Slavery is OK in the Bible; but that is illegalized now. Times have changed. It's time another thing was taken out of the Bible. Same sex marriage.
Around 50% of those students in that room biological parent's have probably been divorced. Therefore, according to the Bible, their parent's second marriage is no longer a religious communion. Divorce is a sin in the Bible, so why is it legal? Because of seperation of Church and State. Why doesn't seperation of Church and State extend to legalizing Same-Sex marriage? Because of the Bible. Wait, that doesn't make sense?

Also, the difference betwen LGBT Rights protest, and anti-LGBT protest, is that LGBT Protestors are protesting for their rights. Anti-LGBT are protesting against other people's rights.

And I don't get your point about how "some [rights] are being prioritize [sic] so that not to offend the others."  Can you give me an example?

I personally wonder if anything that this kid was preaching in this video was an original thought.  It sounded like he'd been coached by an adult to say all of that.  And this happens all the time via Focus on the Family and other groups.

Also, if the student is so versed in his rights, does he know about Tinker v. Des Moines?  Or any of the other court cases and laws on the books that does make it legal for his principal to "censor" him on the grounds that he is protecting the student body?  Or did his coach say "They'll say you have to take it off, but you have rights under God ..."

And seriously, God's law vs. Man's Law and the Constitution is a Christian document?  SERIOUSLY?  First, no, it's not a Christian document.  No matter what your religious right brainwashing told you.  Second ...  SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

    My head hurts.

"If hate is learned, then it lies on the shoulders of our schools, church officials..."  Mannino

Let's stop right there, at church officials.  Where on earth do you think christians learn their hate?  From church officials, who learn it from the "good" book they study and find to be infallible.  What needs to be addressed is the religion these teenagers espouse, because as long as you defend their religion, you're defending their beliefs and thus their hate.

The bible DOES teach hate towards homosexuals (among others, like women), and these teenagers are well within their "rights" as believers to hate as well.  Tackle the religion and you tackle the hate.

Dina - you can't just change christianity, modernize it, and take out certain things you don't like.  What exactly is the point of believing in the religion if you don't believe what it teaches?  If you don't like what much of the bible has to say, as I would hope you don't, then why change it?  Why not, instead, adopt your own belief system rather than adapt a belief system to your own?

Sounds to me like you can think well enough on your own, as most liberals and moderates can.  Which is why I'm so mystified over the defense of the bible by these same people who can obviously discern right from wrong based on their own conscience and sense of integrity.  Relying on superstition originating from ancient books is so NOT modern, so NOT scientific, and so very NOT necessary.

I have long been percolating the rationale for an argument that enables a society, a democratic one anyway, to relegate religion to a back seat in public policy and legislation.

    It goes like this:

When the precepts of any religion, or any part of any religious tradition or belief, results in the expression of hate, repression of, or prejudice against any other group of people [who can be defined as per contemporary "historically discriminated against" standards; open to debate, here], then there shall be NO PROTECTION OF SPEECH in regards to statements, actions, writings, [etc.] by persons who espouse such beliefs and seek to influence public policy in a way that denies EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW to any such group or individual.

Specifically, neither State nor Federal legislative bodies shall make any laws that enable religiously-based discriminatory speech to be considered "protected speech" under the Constitution, nor prohibit laws that restrict such speech when the expression thereof is a direct attempt to incite violence, prejudice or discrimination against protected persons or groups advocating for the equal rights of such persons.

Obviously, I'm thinking of women, minorities, and homosexuals.  But what other groups could be defined here?

    Comments, ideas, suggestions??

I know I'll get a few from the religious right, but I'm more interested in opening up a rational discussion on why, if yelling "Fire" in a crowded theatre is NOT protected speech, allowing hate groups to incite fear, discrimination and violence IS?

    Posted by Arcadia B on 04/26/2009 @ 11:48AM PT

  17. Cynthia Yarrow

Arcadia - you make an excellent point about yelling fire in a crowded theater, and although I agree with you on an emotional level, I think there is a difference between the two.  Yelling "fire" in a crowded theater will have an essentially known outcome, and people could be injured immediately, or, if repeated enough times, inure the crowd to the point of crying wolf.

I think you're going to get mostly the slippery slope argument here with regards to free speech, and I'm not sure I won't deliver it either.  I am torn on this issue because I do believe in unfettered free speech, yet I can see where restrictions could be beneficial.  The problem lies in those who decide upon and administer such restrictions.

The hard part, quite simply, is human society - it does not yet seem evolved enough to be able to have any kind of power and use it wisely.  Once we organize, in the form of governments, religions, and other institutions, we become corrupted (and stupid!).  Of all the animals on the planet, we have the most in common with the political animal, and thus, cannot be trusted with such decisions.

Better to leave them wide open than not.

The little Punk in the video is so brainwashed, that  he doesn't know true history. The Constitution is not a christian doctrian, since no where on it says GOD or Jesus or Moses. It does say creator, but doesn't means a christian god.

most founders of the Constitution were Deists not Christians.  I think  the punk in the video needs to learn also, he is the type of person who most likely would create a hate crime against anyone.. and well hate crime bill was past, so if he does any kind of hate crime he will spend the rest of his life behind bars in Prison. For committing an act of physically harming or killing a person, since the bible does say kill Gays and anyone.

The kid has a point.  Even though what he is saying isn't what I agree with, he can say it.

He didn't say "Go kill them!"  and from what I heard he wasn't trying to cause something violent.

You people keep wanting the First Amendment to be upheld, yet you're trying to tell this kid what he can and cannot say.  Personally, I find that rather hippocratic.

No one is attacking this kid's right to free speech, the whole point of the conversation is a commentary on how stupidity and ignorance leads to hatred.  This kid's brain cells have been washed of all decency and common sense, but fortunately for him, our not-so-xtian Constitution also guarantees him, and others, the right to be stupid.

Indeed, it seems obvious he doesn't possess the smarts or critical thinking skills to ever become a doctor, so he will never have to take the hippocratic oath.  Which is a good thing because if he did, and he harmed people through his hate crusades, then that would make him a hypocrit.

And there's your explanation.  You might want to consider purchasing a dictionary if you're still feeling mystified..
