Tell Congress: Protect All Students and Cosponsor the Safe Schools Improvement Act

Representative Linda Sanchez (CA-39) introduced HR 2262 - the Safe Schools Improvement Act of 2009. This bill will amend the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act to add definitions for bullying and harassment and to include two pre-existing requirements on reporting and on the use of funding. The bill is fully inclusive and specifically lists sexual orientation and gender identity as protected categories. It is also reflective of a new language that refers to "association with a person or group" which adds a layer of protection for children of LGBT parents. The bill will strengthen policy, encourage prevention strategies and professional development and require schools to maintain data on bullying.
