Say NO to Censorship - Let's Not Rewrite American History

There is an education war going on in Texas that you need to know about and get involved with. The TX State Board of Education is currently preparing to adopt new social studies curriculum standards. These standards have major national implications as Texas is such a major purchaser of textbooks and their state’s required curriculum drives the content of textbooks produced nationwide.
The TX State Board of Education has hired 6 "experts" to determine what will be in the books their schools use. Some of these "experts" are arguing that the state’s social studies and history textbooks are giving "too much attention" to some of the most prominent civil rights leaders in US History, namely Cesar Chavez and Thurgood Marshall.
David Barton, one of these "experts," claimed Cesar Chavez "lacks the stature, impact and overall contributions of so many others." He went on to say Chávez is not a role model who "ought to be held up to our children as someone worthy of emulation."
The same "expert" wants to eliminate Thurgood Marshall, a prominent Civil Rights leader who argued the landmark case that resulted in school desegregation and was the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court justice. He wrote that the late justice is "not a strong enough example" of an important historical figure to be presented to Texas students.
Board members and their appointees have complained about an "over representation of minorities" in the current social studies standards.

While, historically, the Texas School Depository has a doubly significant role in American politics as well as American education, that latter influence is waning, not only because ... it's Texas! but also because texts (Texan or not) are also waning. And the current press for testing and for "race to the top" junk is clearly targeting even further decline as the "text" for the next century - with or without teacher assents - is becoming the internet.
I think that's just great because Texas will always have waves of reaction and waves of reform - the state is marginally the poorest and richest in the nation, and its politics vacillate from the Age of Johnson (more like Daley than Bloomberg), to the Age of Perry (more like Alabama than California). The Barton influence merely marks a high water drowning of the Perry peril. Get rid of him!

Leave it to Texas (excepting Austin) to lead us down the path of social regression and knowledge suppression. If I'm not mistaken, Texas is also the state with the highest execution rate in the country while being the most unwilling to reopen or re-examine cases where there has been obvious abuse and failure of the "judicial" process. The old saying that "the rich NEVER hang" is epitomized in Texas.
Yeah, let good old Texas decide what is fact, fair, and truly worthy history ! ! !

Censorship and discrimination will only separate our world at a time when we must all come together to solve critical issues which impact all of us, i.e. global warming, homelessness, poverty, abuse against all members and creatures of society, etc. A Librarian for over 20 years I will never condone censorship!!! Take a look at the American Library Association Bill of Rights.

Censorship of material pertaining to LGBT should never be made due to the fact that sexual orientation is a part of a normal society and has been for thousands of years. It is a normal part of todays society and has become a social justice item. Banning material on this subject should never be tolerated.

Pledge fulfilled Sep 02!
Texas wants to rewrite History? Wanna bet they misspell all the big words?
Great pledge, Christina! Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Texas has an inglorious history of American history censorship. One family--names forgotten--used the proportional # of Presidential pictures in a text to determine its suitability.

Thanks for this pledge!
Censorship is wrong in many ways, and I hope that it stops on the Animal Rights blog on change.org as well. Time to start a petition over there. We are SO tired of having our opinions and comments deleted and censored by the "host".
Blocking people out of history books or deleting comments by passionate activists all comes from the same type of power struggle and control from the people at the "top" making decisions for people on what they can and cannot read or learn.
I am all for keeping our freedom of speech and stopping censorship- in books, and at change.org.
