GOP: Don't Gut $60+ Billion for Education from the Stimulus Package

To: The President of the United States and The U.S. Senate

Started by: Clay Burell

The AP reports on Saturday, 7 Feb. 2009, that Republican senators propose "cuts of $60 billion from money Democrats want to send to the states. That money is targeted to avoid budget cuts for schools as well as law enforcement and other programs."

Greg Sergeant reported on a GOP memo circulating in the Senate that identifies proposed cuts in "Head Start, Education for the Disadvantaged, School improvement, Child Nutrition, Firefighters," and other investments.

Even if the Senate approves the proposal this weekend, there's still time to save the education funds. From the AP:

"Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan told reporters he and others hoped that some of the funds on the chopping block would be restored next week when negotiations open on a House-Senate compromise.

State budgets can't keep schools afloat in the current meltdown. Encourage your Senator to support the stimulus aid to education. It will keep people in jobs, create more, and improve the conditions for the neediest students to learn in school.

Don't Sacrifice Education to Tax Breaks in Stimulus

Dear Representative,

The media reports attempts by Senate Republicans to cut more than $60 billion for education from the stimulus package. Please do not let them succeed.

Cutting funding for Head Start, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, school renovations, teacher and staff layoffs, and child nutrition will do more to widen the achievement gap than the money spent on NCLB testing and management does to close it.

Please make every effort to implement the change we voted for, instead of four more years of failed tax cuts the GOP is successfully pushing for.

Thank you.
